JSON Merge Online: Combine Configs Without Breaking Keys
Combining environment configs or API payloads by hand is slow and easy to mess up. A merge tool makes overrides obvious so you can see what changed before it hits staging.
Use the JSON Merge tool to combine two objects safely.
Quick steps
- Paste the base JSON on the left.
- Paste the override JSON on the right.
- Review the merged output and any conflicts or replaced keys.
- Copy the result and validate before deploy.
Example
Base:
{
"timeout": 10,
"region": "us-east-1",
"features": { "beta": false }
}
Override:
{
"timeout": 30,
"features": { "beta": true, "analytics": true }
}
Result (typical deep merge behavior):
{
"timeout": 30,
"region": "us-east-1",
"features": { "beta": true, "analytics": true }
}
The override wins on conflicting keys; untouched keys from the base remain.
Typical use cases
| Scenario | Why merge helps |
|---|---|
| Default + environment override | Ship defaults.json plus prod.json without manual copy-paste |
| Feature flag rollout | Layer a small override object onto a large config |
| API fixture updates | Combine a base response with test-specific fields |
After merging, run the output through JSON Formatter for review and JSON Validator before deployment. To see a line-by-line diff instead, use Compare and Diff.
Common mistakes
- Merging arrays blindly. Arrays are often replaced entirely, not concatenated. Confirm behavior before relying on merged lists.
- Shallow vs deep merge. Nested objects may merge key-by-key or replace as a whole depending on tool behavior. Inspect nested results.
- Invalid JSON input. Fix syntax errors before merging; one bad document breaks the whole operation.
Verification checklist
- Spot-check keys that must not change (region, account IDs, secrets placeholders).
- Validate merged JSON with JSON Validator.
- If something looks wrong, use JSON Path Finder to inspect nested paths.
